About the organization

St. Justine’s Youth & Children Association (also known as St. Justine’s Preparatory School) REG. NO KDC 7/5/212 started 8th July 2013, and was founded by Mr Magesa (teacher by profession) after seeing most children were seeking jobs in the street. They not go to school due to family problems and a poor learning environment in the government schools around the village of Mkamba.  Mr Magesa and Mr Bartazali Mtitu started collecting children in the street, offering them a basic education such as counting, reading and writing.

There is a lot of poverty in the slums. Joblessness makes people get involved in prostitution and the selling of drugs. This has, in recent years, resulted in the high spreading of HIV and has become a disaster. Some children are orphaned and cannot continue going to school. There are so many children around the slums who don’t get three meals a day and survive with just one meal. There is not enough support for the children to get an education and the number continues to increase every day. In Tanzania public schools are fewer than children, and you will find a class of 80 children being handled by one teacher; therefore, at the end of the day, the quality of education is low.

It is due to this reason that a group of three volunteers committed to help some children get into school. St. Justine’s Youth & Children Association was started by few volunteers to care for these needy children, and has two rented classrooms for more than 65 children. There is a baby class, a nursery, pre-unit classes, and class 1 and class 2.  The education system in Tanzania is: three years at kindergarten, seven years in primary, four years at secondary school, two years in advanced level secondary, and three years at university. St. Justine's Children Centre offers kindergarten education, and since last year we now also offer a primary school education. The school needs extra classrooms to be able to take care of the number of both kindergarten and primary school children, and not in a rented facility because the expense is too high (we already own a plot somewhere else, but we still need to build the school on it).

The school is a registered charity, and it provides breakfast and lunch for all the children. Everything comes from the donations given by well-wishers. Children come to the centre at 8am and stay until 4pm, whereafter they go home to their guardians. We also have volunteer teachers who help in teaching the children. We recruit volunteers from all over the world to volunteer with our school. Volunteers help by cooking for the children, making home visits, washing, sports, photos/filming, social works, and by teaching.
